Douglasville, Georgia, October 21, 2011
Harvester Christian Academy celebrated its annual Grandparents Day for the 5th consecutive year. Grandparents traveled from as far away as Colorado, Texas and Pennsylvania for this special day. These honored guests were cheered up the front steps of the school and greeted with elementary and middle school students singing patriotic songs on screen. More than 250 grandparents heard headmaster Joel Satterly challenge them to consider the opportunity they have to influence their grandchildren at a time when students might not be as interested in what parents have to say.
Of the grandparents in attendance, Joanne Gardner of Douglasville was recognized as having the most grandchildren with 39, three of whom attend Harvester. Mrs. Gardner said “I was excited to come to Grandparents Day and look forward to it each year.” Sara and Reg Slayton from Newnan, who have attended the event every year, were honored for being married the longest – 58 years.
Grandparents were invited to their grandchildren’s classrooms where some heard the pledge of allegiance, worked puzzles and received personalized poems and pictures. As the day wound down, grandparents and grandkids were photographed by a professional photographer and treated to a lunch reception. Many students signed out early to spend more time with their grandparents.
Harvester Headmaster Satterly says “Grandparents provide legacy for their families and for our school. It is a blessing for us to have them on our campus for this dedicated day.”
